He attended school in Cadott and graduated high school in 1950. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy. Bill was a Boilerman/Fireman on two Destroyers: the USS Sarsfield and the USS Rooks. During his tour on the USS Rooks, he participated in the Korean Conflict and sailed around the world with multiple ports of call. He served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict (1951-1954), serving aboard an experimental destroyer, the USS Sarsfield. He returned to Lincoln and joined his father on the family farm. In April 1957, he married Mildred Sieck Schoenbeck in Seward, Nebraska. He was a devoted father to her children, Phil and Maxine, whom he adopted in 1958. Reenlisted at Seattle, Wash. for 6 yrs and was transferred to USS SKAGIT (AKA-105). In May 1953 left for shore duty at Naval Phib Base Coronado, CA. for nornal tour of shore duty.
